October 2001: Munchy

Mmmm, little pony . . . tastes like chicken!
October is traditionally a month of ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties, so I wanted to feature someone frightening, someone that made people cringe away in horror and gasp, "Dear God! What have they done?? They've created a MONSTER!!"

But haven't we already seen enough of the post-1998 ponies?

Nobody bothers *Munchy* when she's using the kitchen. Instead, I chose Munchy. At first, she may not seem frightening compared to, say, the huge, leering plushies or the Beddy-Bye Eye babies, (a set so terrifying that I only handle them with heavy gloves for fear they'll gnaw away my hands.) After all, Munchy is a Twice-As-Fancy pony, part of a set almost revered for their elegance and beauty.

But reflect on this:

Munchy is a herbivore covered with processed meat.

Think about it. Can you picture the ponies' culture supporting a slaughterhouse? Do you think Baby Lucky Leaf is just fattening up her little pal Leafy in case she gets hungry? No? Well, what does that tell you about Munchy?

Munchy poses as her TAF brethern freeze in terror. Yep, she's an ostracized freak . . . my favorite type of pony.

In my twisted version of Ponyland, Munchy's bizarre affinity for flesh translated into cannabilism, partly because cows aren't prevelant in my Ponyland and partly because . . . well, I thought it would be funny. ^_^ (Anyway, hamburgers may be beef products, but who knows what the hell goes into hot dogs? I'll bet there's some horsemeat in there somewhere.)

Let's give a big round of applause for Munchy, the October PotM!

And then let's slowly back away.

OVERALL:

Physical Demeanor: Pale yellow earthling, coral hair, blue eyes, covered with pickles, french fries, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Yes, as if she weren't frightening enough, Munchy sports the traditional McDonalds colors.

Hasbro-sponsored Appearances: Well, she was in a few coloring books. She would've appeared on more merchandise, but the Hasbro employees really didn't want to get close enough to discuss marketing strategies and royalties with her.

LM-sponsored Appearances: She's going to show up in a few fanfics eventually.

Highlights: She's like a walking freak show. Hey, it's a bonus in my book! ^_^

Lowlights: Either her designer didn't think her symbol through very well, or he was just one seriously screwed up individual. Also, no TV appearances (she came after the MLP and Friends series) or UK comic cameos (her set wasn't released in the UK.)

Weirdness: What isn't weird about Munchy?

Return to last month's feature.

Take a glance at next month's feature.
